JAKARTA, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi on Wednesday apologized on behalf of the government over the capsizing of a boat near the entrance of Sanur Harbor, Bali, and called for prompt measures to address the accident.
According to Dudy's statement on Wednesday, the vessel, carrying 75 passengers and five crew members, departed from Nusa Penida Harbor at about 2:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday and capsized around 3:15 p.m. as it was entering Sanur Harbor.
"We express our condolences and regret for the capsizing of the Bali Dolphin Cruise 2 fast boat at the entrance to Sanur Harbor, Bali. On behalf of the government, we apologize and will promptly handle and evaluate this accident," Dudy said in the statement.
The statement said sea conditions were calm during the voyage, but as the boat passed the red and green beacon buoys at the harbor entrance and turned to approach the dock, a sudden wave struck the port side, causing the vessel to overturn.
The minister said that a navigational warning had also been issued to help prevent similar maritime accidents and ensure shipping safety.
Two passengers, who were Chinese nationals, were confirmed dead, and one crew member was missing as a result of the accident. A total of 73 passengers and four crew members were rescued and taken for treatment.
As of Wednesday, the body of the missing crew has been found, bringing the death toll to three.
The Chinese consulate general in Denpasar, Bali, reminded Chinese citizens in Indonesia to monitor sea condition information and pay attention to travel safety. ■
