BRATISLAVA, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Slovak government has decided not to join the Board of Peace, set up by U.S. President Donald Trump, for now, according to a document approved by the cabinet at its session on Wednesday.

"Slovakia will support all peace initiatives that have the potential to contribute to stability and are not in conflict with the rules that, in line with the United Nations (UN) Charter of 1945, have helped to protect us from a Third World War following the horrors of the first two," the Slovak government said.

The cabinet noted that new initiatives creating obligations under international law must be carefully assessed. It pointed to Article 103 of the UN Charter, which requires Slovakia to give precedence to obligations arising from the UN Charter in the event of a conflict with obligations stemming from decisions adopted within the Board of Peace.

Under the current plan, Trump would serve as the board's inaugural chairman, a position he could hold for life. Trump has said that permanent members would each be required to contribute 1 billion U.S. dollars to fund the board. ■
